Sulwaco (sull-WAY-ko; IPA: /səlˈweɪkoʊ/) is the westernmost province of Canada. Nested between British Columbia and Yukon Territory, the province's coastline is mountainous and dotted with thousands of islands carved by melting ice from the Last Glacial Maximum. It borders Alberta to the east, Yukon to the north, Alaska to the northwest, and British Columbia to the south. Its provincial capital and largest metropolitan area is Collectings, home to 932,000 people.
A small portion of Treaty 8 is located within Northeastern sections of Sulwaco.
Etymology
The name Sulwaco comes from the Thuneent word sʔələwáquw̓, meaning 'places where beavers are'. It has been alternatively anglicized as Solowackoo or Sullwackow before Confederation in 1893, where its current spelling was officially designated.
History
Confederation
The Sulwaco Act of 1893 delineated and separated the Province of Sulwaco from the rest of the Northwest Territories.
At Confederation in 1893, Sulwaco occupied less than one-tenth of its current size controlling a rough irregular square around Collectings.
